Bushido, the author explains, is not the way of life of the general population of old Japan but of its warrior class. Inazo Nitobé is uniquely qualified to introduce this ancient system to a western audience. A convert to Christianity, intimately familiar with European and American customs, history, and literature, he skillfully weaves examples from those traditions into his narrative. How else could a westerner even hope to understand a practice like hara-kiri, a ritual form of suicide. Nitobé, giving us to understand that this is not a modern practice, uses examples of similar practices found in Western literature and history—instances we have routinely accepted as tragic yet noble deaths. The reader will find, however, that the above plays a very limited role in the system. Bushido is, in fact, driven by many of the qualities we most admire justice, honor, loyalty, kindness, truthfulness, moral and physical courage — qualities incorporated into codes of honor around the world. Historians will remind us that modern police forces did not become common in Western cities until the second half of the nineteenth century. The population generally relied on community “watches” and the wealthy sometimes on paid (not always honorable) guards. In Japan, samurai warriors filled that role and did so with practiced skill within a strict and honorable system. And to achieve peace and justice without resort to violence was to attain ultimate honor.

I got this books for a college class and found myself learning a lot more than I had expected. The read was smooth and I retained a lot of what I read. This book is a classic, and gives you a great perspective into Bushido as a historical driving force in Japan. It also allows for you to make your own conclusions on if Bushido is still present in Japan to this day and if Bushido's existence is still relevant to Japanese culture. It is not a very long book at all and you can knock it out in a very short while. Though it is short, you will have a better understanding of Japanese sociology as well as the reasons why Japan has formed the way it has. Overall, I felt this book offered a lot. This book has been around for a while, and I am glad that I got around to reading it. If you are interested in Japan at all, please take a look at this book and get a feel for the country, more than just the superficial and stereotypical "sushi" and "manga" perspectives. You'll take away a lot more than anyone else who just looks at current Japan ever will. Light, easy read with very insightful explanations of Japanese sociological workings and their reasons for existing. Recommend.Product details

Bushido the Soul of Japan Classic Thought Series Inazo Nitobe 9781542553995 Books Reviews
It is difficult to truly understand an individual without their history. The same for any culture. The tone of the writing says just as much about the tradition of Bushido as the examples given throughout.
great, book, one you'll want to ready more than once, highly recommend for anyone working with the Japanese or just wanting to know more about Japan.
I bought and read this book quite a while ago in soft cover. It's a quick read and full of information that if you take consideration of, makes you a better person. The only drawback in the philosophy is "sepuku" strictly forbidden in my family group.
there are numerous books published trying to describe the Japanese mentality. Books written by non-Japanese authors did not come close to Mr. Nitobe book Bushido. It is one of the best books written about the spirit of the Japanese mentality and ethics. Bushido is the source of Japanese ethics and tradition. I highly recommend this book, if you are seriously interested to learn about the Japanese mentality.
Rated it 4 stars because it is a difficult book to read with references to authors in languages other than English. It is also a good idea to keep a good dictionary nearby as this reads like a treatise with many words outside of my vocabulary. That being said, I plan on reading this a few times to give it full justice and get as much out of it as possible. This is the first time I have delved into the history of Japan.
Why do Japanese people are so polite, very composed, highly discipline, and very efficient? Why do they sometime show little emotions, and why to them loyalty is one of the utmost importance? And what's the reasoning and the psychology behind the infamous hara-kiri?
All of these traits are deeply rooted in the Samurai code of honour and morals, or Bushido, instilled in the psyche of the nation since the 12th century. And this classic book, written in 1900, gives the best compacted explanations on these time-tested principles that made the nation.
Bushido is a remarkable book that examines samurai culture and ideology through the prism of western history. As a fan of the various samurai periods, I was enthralled as Nitobe, an erudite multicultural Japanese social observer, dissected the mores, foibles and peccadilloes of both American and Japanese cultures from the ancients to the early 20th century dispelling myths and illuminating the most obscure and vilified traditions and rituals of the samurai. The narrative is as refined as a tea ceremony and cuts through prejudice and rhetoric like a razor sharp katana to reveal the beauty and discipline of the samurai.
