When young Brandon Grey disappears, no one thinks he’ll be missing for long.

When another boy vanishes, parents begin to worry about their children. When bodies turn up in the local river, cut to pieces, stuffed inside industrial-strength black trash bags, the town begins to shut down.

It's Fall, 1995. Holson is a sleepy, middle-class suburb, whose most interesting news amounts to farmer’s markets and Friday night football games.

The day that Brandon Grey is last seen walking home from school by teachers, two young boys are starting a street hockey game. A man stops at the end of their block, takes a picture of them, and drives off. All they catch is the model and color of the car he’s driving.

Jake and Colin, fueled by their ambition to form a detective club, decide to go searching for the car that haunts them. They soon take it upon themselves to find Brandon Grey. As tensions in town rise, and so does the body count, they find themselves deep in a mystery they never bargained for, closer to the serial killer than they ever should have gone.

There's a lesson to be learned here - do not go by other people's reviews of books (except for mine, of course). There were a few negative & mediocre reviews on amazon that made me wonder if Neighborhood Watch would be worth reading. Those doubts were outweighed by the fact that the story took place in NJ (once a Jersey girl, always a Jersey girl) & that it was told from a kid's point of view. The story is told by Colin, the adult, told in retrospect about Colin, the 4th grader & his two friends, Jake & Evan. I was able to identify with these kids right off the bat - the descriptions of the neighborhood, camping in the Pine Barrens (the stomping grounds of the Jersey Devil, with whom every Jersey kid is familiar), the excitement of Halloween, the parents. In my circle of neighborhood friends, we each had our own set of parents - every set distinctly different from every other set - the descriptions of the family dynamics of these 3 kids is on-spot. To top it all off, at about the same age, my 2 best neighborhood friends & I were totally obsessed with finding "mysteries" to solve. Two of us were gung-ho unstoppable, the third had to be coaxed along, much like Evan in the book. On our street, which sounded exactly like the streets in the book, we had 3 houses that we spied on constantly, from a distance but also alarmingly up close (front porch windows up close), convinced that there were nefarious goings on that only we could uncover; this resulted of course in several confrontations, parents being called, groundings, etc.- but only growing up deterred us. Because of that, I was able to identify with the excitement of Colin & Drake in pursuing their goal - finding out who was responsible for the disappearance & eventual murders of multiple area young boys. This is an excitement that drives you on, way past the point where your common sense tells you to stop. The last quarter of the book got so exciting I literally could not put down - I HAD to know what happened & the story moved at breakneck speed to a great & satisfying conclusion. In my past life of buying actual physical books, Stephen King was my #1 favorite author. His story,The Body, which later became the movie Stand By Me, had a similar effect on me - the closeness of childhood friends, the secret clubs, the older kids, doing stuff you know your parents would kill you for. In 100% honesty, I have to say that Neighborhood Watch was even better than The Body - both stories totally immerse you in the characters, but Mr. Turkot's book has more suspense & more detail about how hard kids try to get around their parents, doing things their parents couldn't even imagine them doing, although by human nature, they probably did similar things back in the day. If you had a childhood to remember - additionally fueled by imagination & a dread of boredom - you will love this booBek. Guaranteed!!

Neighborhood Watch A Crime Fiction Mystery Novel eBook Joseph Turkot Reviews

I loved that this book was written through the eyes of a young boy in a small town. The writer did such a fantastic job describing the town that I could smell Fall and feel the breeze, the rain on my face and the crunch of leaves under my feet. The three boys were so different yet each in their own way brought the story together. Great Job!
Surprisingly good story, written from the point of view of a teenage boy. After he and his two best friends see a man watching them and taking pictures of them, they form a crime club in order to discover young boys are disappearing from their area. They suspect a man who drives a car like the picture taker and begin watching his house. The story proceeds from there with a lot of twists until the surprising ending.
Highly recommended suspense story.
wow what a different story and written with an eleven year old experience....some one in the area is killing young boys and 3 friends form a club to find out who..their thinking is interesting..the story really holds you...don't miss it!
This took me back to the days when my friends and I rode our bikes everywhere.
Parents didn't care if I was miles away because there was no crime to speak of. I tried to remember if I even had a key to the house, and I don't think I ever did.
Two best friends decide to investigate a kidnapping. They have no clue how to do it, but they press on as 10 yr olds are equipped to do. Little by little they get themselves in a mess.
The story was good, but the extra attention to how kids thought, especially around girls, and in school, was charming.
I made it 4 stars because it spent a little too much time spinning their wheels, pun intended.

I think back then, I read every Hardy boys mystery and thought they were great.
I was totally delighted by this novel, perhaps because it's set in an area I'm extremely familiar with (Haddon Township in Camden County, NJ). But the story of the friends is very well crafted, and Turkot perfectly portrays the mind of 11-year-old boys. The story popped off the pages and I was disappointed when it ended! At one point I couldn't stop laughing out loud, because he described so well the realistically crazy things young boys can get into. It reminded me a bit of "Stand By Me" in the sense that young friends band together to go on an adventure and solve a mystery. I couldn't put it down, and am eager to read his next book, which should be out soon.
I love to read and this was a good book I enjoyed it very much!
You will too..give it a chance and it won't let you down...
*if it wasn't good believe me I would tell you😉
I was all prepared to give this book two stars until the final few chapters were consumed. My opinion then changed. The ending here is written well enough to tantalize the reader and make reading this book a worthwhile exercise. The plot is good two best friends form a neighborhood watch of sorts, creating their own detective agency called "the X-Force." They then draft a third friend, an introverted computer geek, into the mix to help them with their "missions" to find out if a man who was taking their photos from up the street is the same one who has been abducting and murdering young boys in the area.
The writing is fine, the characters are relatable and the story line offers a lot of promise. However, for the first 90 percent of the book there is precious little action. Here, the author takes up too much time and too much space describing the various streets, yards and fences by which our indomitable protagonists travel the neighborhood. By the end of the book, I simply could not stand reading one more description of one more yard, fence or bush.
Ultimately, the execution is flawed and the journey is boring at times but the end happens at a breakneck (maybe too much so) pace.
